Backward and forward linkages:

There is a total lack of backward and forward linkages in Food Processing Industries in Manipur. Creation of such an opportunity in the State is highly needed linkage from farm to Processing Units and Markets outlets.

Issues: - Food Processing Units as well as farmers are lack of Backward and forward linkages benefits.

R&D value addition

Research and Development as many agro-horticultural produce and processing have been done in certain areas by Universities and other institutions. However, it needs to give thrust areas on R&D on value addition to produce more processed food products with quality and applications in the industry.

Issues: -

    1. No complete and compile data are not available on the R&D works taken up the Universities in Manipur.
    2. Less R&D work on value addition of food products and technology development to make available in the Food Processing Industrial Units.

Role of organic foods/GM Foods

Most of the agro-horticultural produce in the State are organic particularly in the hill areas of Manipur. However, there is no data on this. 

Issues:

    1. No data is available about the organic products.
    2. No organic certificating Agency in Manipur.
    3. Organic cultivation/farming procedure is different from the general cultivation and farming.
    4. Lack of knowledge of Technology of organic farming.

Consumer preferences/market trends – global and local

The present scenario of consumer preference/market in the global and local are ready to serve (RTS) foods, i.e. consumer foods, snack food, packed cooked meals, drinks (synthetic and natural) etc. The entire market is now dominated by consumer foods because these are ready to eat/drink, ready available, and safe and good. In Manipur too, the consumer food production is seen increasing in the last 5 years. But most of these food products are lack of proper packaging, quality standard, etc. Department of Commerce & Industries, Manipur, is imparting training to the local producers/SHGs to get hand on experience on the basic knowledge of Food Processing Industries.

Issues:

  1. Proper training to local food producers is required.
  2. Proper packaging facility is required.
  3. Knowledge of Food Safety and Standards must to given.

Proposal: -      Short-term training programme on various food products in all parts of the State is required.
